Old Rip Van Winkles history can be traced back to the early 1890s in Louisville, Kentucky, when Julian Van Winkle began working as a travelling salesman for W.L. Weller & Sons. H later purchased the A. Ph. Stitzel Distillery and began producing a number of bourbon brands including Old Rip Van Winkle.
Julian Van Winkle was affectionately known as Pappy, another brand name under the Old Rip Van Winkle sable. He built a bourbon empire, living by the motto [w]e make fine bourbon at a profit if we can, at a loss if we must, but always fine bourbon.
